Specification Capture
An Introduction The development of a database or software
application usually begins with requirements capture and analysis. A common
starting point is a natural language document produced by the client (or
by the analyst on the basis of taped interviews) describing the application
required from the client's point of view.
The analyst then needs to analyze this document for functional and technical
requirements to produce a semi-formal document, which specifies what is
required, again in natural language but with minimal ambiguity and maximal
clarity. This document is understandable to the client and will generally
be reviewed by him/her and may form the basis of contractual obligations
between the client and the vendor.
As evident from the above, requirement and specification capture is often
a tedious and time-consuming process. It is a time-tested truth that in
spite of the best of efforts, clients often are not very sure of their
requirements resulting in improper and erroneous SRS.
The magnitude of complexity grows manifold when companies need to be at
foreign customer site to capture specifications and requirements with
increased overhead cost.
Specification Capture is a customer-centric web-based tool, which complements
the effort of the customer in putting forward the requirement specification
in a structured way and makes the task of system analyst easier.
How Specification Capture Works
Specification Capture provides a web-based interface to the customer using
which the customer can put forward requirement and specifications in a
predefined format. Any customer can avail the service in two different
ways :
- Registration Based Services
- Ticket Based
REGISTRATION BASED SERVICE
To avail subscription-based service, a customer needs to register itself.
During registration process, customer details needs to be fed following,
which, he/she can start using the service. Users of registration based
service can submit one or multiple requirements and/or specifications.
To facilitate structured requirement capture, the system groups the requirements
under different category. These are :
- Query Details
- Business Details
- Document Details
- Existing Details
- Platform Details
- System Details
Customers can use the web interface to feed in information pertaining
to a query and submit it. Analyst addresses to queries submitted and feedback
on the same is available to the customers through an interactive offline
message board. At any given point of time, a customer can submit multiple
queries. Every query submitted is identified uniquely and a log is maintained
for the same.
One of the most important features of the Specification Capture software,
which makes indispensable, is the Drawing Tool. The Drawing Tool is unique
of its kind, which provides the customer the ability to draw an interface
to elucidate their requirements pictorially. Using Drawing tool is easy.
The user just needs to drag and drop different controls like text boxes,
labels, and combo boxes to prepare the visual representation of its requirement.
The prepared visual representation can be easily submitted with a query
for the analyst to have a better understanding of the specification.
TICKET BASED SERVICE
Specification Capture can also be used by Ticket based service. Contrast
to the registration based service, the ticket-based service only allows
customer to submit a single query. Ticket based service also does not
provide users with the powerful drawing tool. Apart from these, all other
features are available to a customer as that of a registration based service.
